Day 13 – Labenne to San Sebastian – The hardest day

Day 13
Weds 11th September
Kms travelled; 1320
Kms to go: 0

So we left our woodland hut in darkness at 6:30am. We were in good spirits as we only had 70km left to cycle and with our average cycling speed (inc stops) of 10k per hour, we would be in San Sebastian by 2pm for a dip in the ocean.

Stopped off for the usual lunch provisions, then through the glorious mackerel sunrise, negotiated some busy towns at rush hour then an elevensies stop. Quite a few steep ups and downs but fabulous scenery with glimpses of the ocean.

And then it broke me

The end

The ups were bad but then some of the downs, were so steep I had to walk and it was relentless.

Km after Km.

Just over the boarder at Irun (we blinked and missed it), we stopped with 19km to go, I considered a train but that appeared to take longer than the cycle

At the sleepy town of Altzibar, we stopped at a bar, I could barely talk but after downing a large coke and a beer, I considered starting a new life as I could not go on.

Some how we arrive at a beautiful apartment in San Sebastian and after a shower, a bottle of fizz and some great food, we are nearly human again.
